-The Sin of Eli & Church Discipline

J. Lee Grady, editor of Charisma Magazine has posted some timely and essential thoughts on church discipline in a recent article: Fire In My Bonesclick on archives: 2-02-07- Cowardice, Compromise and the Sin of Eli. He closes with the following call for action:

The bottom line: Godly leaders draw lines and enforce moral standards–without becoming self-righteous and unkind. Ungodly leaders, on the other hand, may appear to be nice and compassionate, but they actually are unfaithful to God if they refuse to require their spiritual sons and daughters to follow Biblical standards of behavior.

We are in a moment of serious leadership crisis in the American church, and part of our problem is the sin of Eli. I am making an appeal: will the fathers and mothers of the church please do their job? We need your rebuke and your rod of correction.

Please go to those who are exploiting God’s people financially and make them stop. Please confront those who are robbing the church for personal gain. Please go to those who are abusing others, sexually or in any other way, remove them from leadership and get them healed.

Please don’t let the Hophnis and Phinehases of today have airtime on Christian TV. Please don’t showcase them in your conferences. Please stop looking the other way when you hear about their blunders. Please restore discipline to the body of Christ.

Response: I believe that Jesus is beginning to purify his church. Leaders with secret sins are about to be exposed. Those who openly abuse their positions are about to be rejected. Now is the time for leaders to get their life in order before the cameras and the lights are turned on. The Haggard affair is just the beginning. True Revival always seems to begin with true repentance and a cleansing of the Temple. New leaders will soon rise up and old leaders will be transformed or they will fall or fade away. I believe that those leaders who claim to seek Revival but delay in responding to the Spirit and continue to do their own thing will not be left standing when the fullness of a mighty rushing wind blows across the land.

-Speaking in Tongues: Interesting Medical Research

The University of Pennsylvania has been conducting tests viewing brain images of people while they were speaking in tongues. I found reference to this in the January copy of Charima Magazine (pg. 15). A complete article on this research can be read at Newswise with this link, including the following important quotes:

“We noticed a number of changes that occurred functionally in the brain,” comments Principal Investigator Andrew Newberg, MD, Associate Professor of Radiology, Psychiatry, and Religious Studies, and Director for the Center for Spirituality and the Mind, at Penn. Our finding of decreased activity in the frontal lobes during the practice of speaking in tongues is fascinating because these subjects truly believe that the spirit of God is moving through them and controlling them to speak. Our brain imaging research shows us that these subjects are not in control of the usual language centers during this activity, which is consistent with their description of a lack of intentional control while speaking in tongues.”

Newberg went on to explain, “These findings could be interpreted as the subject’s sense of self being taken over by something else. We, scientifically, assume it’s being taken over by another part of the brain, but we couldn’t see, in this imaging study, where this took place. We believe this is the first scientific imaging study evaluating changes in cerebral activity — looking at what actually happens to the brain — when someone is speaking in tongues. This study also showed a number of other changes in the brain, including those areas involved in emotions and establishing our sense of self.”

Well it least I found it interesting. It doesn’t really affect our Biblical or Spiritual understanding of the gift of Tongues.

-Revival: The Possible Intolerant Responses

I have recently listened to several different radio interviews featuring Sam Harris (author of: The End of Faith & A Letter to a Christian Nation) and Richard Dawkins (God Delusion) who are agressively opposing religion and calling for greater controls and ultimate suppression. They particularly favor outlawing religious education of children referring to it as “brainwashing” and a form of “child abuse”.

Fortunately, even the main stream media is currently challenging some of their radical perspectives. An article in February 2007 Christianity Today entiled: The New Intolerance documents some of this opposition.

Yesterday I was thinking about this particular article and said to myself that it will all be put to rest when true Revival shows up and thousands of people start getting healed. I was truly surprised with an impression that came back immediately into my mind:

No these people will even be more threatened with an active Spirit filled church. Particularly when some of their colleagues are converted. When it comes to healing, they will support ‘scientific’ experiments to demonstrate and prove that healing is merely a natural latent ability that some humans have. The opposition in the demonic realm will be more than happy to help out in the ‘research’. Wo!!

Today I was thinking about Revival, and it occurred to me that others from the entertainment industry, business leaders, educators, politicians, and quite a few religious ‘leaders’ will probably end up opposing any Revival because of all the changes it will bring to our society on a diverse number of levels. Well it is just a thought, can’t imagine folks preferring the dead old cultural church that prevails today.

-The ‘Spirit of Cain’ Short Circuits Major Revival-Part II: Conclusion

In addition to the blog posts mentioned in Part I, this article was largely inspired by a message given by Steve Thompson (Director of MorningStar Ministries) who recently ministered at VCC-Laguna Niguel (12/8-10). He talked about how jealousy continues to divide Christian ministers, ministries, and churches. He said that this is similar to the reaction of Cain to the favor that God showered upon his brother Abel.

He linked it to why ‘small Revivals’ seldom grow into large nation shaking events. He said that they usually get short circuited by the enemy who sows jealousy, division, delusion, and falsehood. However, Steve Thompson spent the majority of the time talking about the solution. His conclusions: Ministers and leaders need to learn to rejoice when others are blessed or receive a greater impartation and anointing. We all need to learn to agree with what the Father is doing and seek to be in tune with the heart of God.

His teaching continued: When we are in tune with what the Father is doing and rejoice when others receive, then the way is clear for us to receive also, possibly even a greater blessing. When we have some difficulty with the blessings and anointings that the Father gives to others, then the blessings that God intends for us may be delayed or blocked.

Also, the ‘judgment principle’ kicks in when we question why God is blessing others who seem to us to be less deserving. Then the Lord is obligated to judge us by the same measurement (Matt. 7:1-2clip_image002). However, if we rejoice in the Father’s mercy and grace towards others, then we may be eligible to receive the same.

My conclusions (at least for now): We can’t do this by ourselves, it requires greater intimacy with the Father and only his Spirit can give us the necessary discernment. If we try to do it on our own and try to train and discipline ourselves to rejoice when others receive, it could degenerate into witchcraft. We could end up rejoicing in order to receive. It’s probably why Cain’s offering didn’t receive favor from God. He was probably giving in order to receive, rather than giving in the spirit of true worship. That’s probably why he was so angry when Abel received favor from God instead. Things would have turned out different if he had rejoiced with his brother.

I believe that there is a trap that Christians fall into here. We can be so intent upon receiving greater anointing from God individually and for our own church that we sometimes ignore what the Father is doing with others if it doesn’t involve us. Greater Revival is a corporate body of Christ deal which requires lots of folk to cooperate not only with what the Father is doing in their own lives and churches, but also be engaged with what God is doing in the lives of others, and be sensitive to what the Spirit is doing across the entire Body of Christ.

I believe that this is why the Holy Spirit is touching so many prophetic folk right now to talk about seeking greater intimacy with the Father. I believe that the Lord would like to open up the heavens soon and bring a Revival that will shake the nations. However, greater intimacy with God will be increasingly essential in order to properly support the move and to make the changes and continual adjustments necessary in order to keep it expanding and growing.

The ‘Spirit of Cain’ Short Circuits Major Revival-Part I

One of the dirty little secrets which seem to prevail and continue to divide Christian ministers, ministries, and churches is jealousy (or call it whatever else you want). This is actually similar to the reaction of Cain to the favor of God showered upon his brother Abel. Cain probably taught his younger brother everything he knew and yet Abel ends up with the greater blessing from God? We all know how that episode turned out. Christians are usually far more subtle and most would not even consider their reactions as jealousy.

It usually starts out with one minister asking God to bless his ministry as much as another that he has observed. Maybe there is another church in town that is growing fast and you wonder why. This is not necessarily bad, unless one begins to covet the anointing and position of another. There can be a fine line between seeking the best gifts and anointings that our Father has for us, possibly being mentored by one who moves in those giftings, and actually being jealous (or sad) when someone else receives a greater impartation than we have or gets ‘promoted’ before we do.

I started thinking about this issue after reading an earlier article which references a group and a blog which spends an incredible amount of time and energy opposing a successful minister and mega church in my own neighborhood (I can see the church from my house). A ministry which has brought hundreds and maybe even thousands to Christ and has a good reputation in the community. It is definitely not a Revival but the ‘opposition’ modus operandi is similar.

It all reminded me of a time 18-20 years ago while I was attending VCF Anaheim, John Wimber was the Pastor, the place was rocking and the Spirit was moving in a dramatic way. Maybe it wasn’t Revival but it was close, and it was definitely a move of God. Then along came the self-appointed ‘heresy hunters’, next the opposition pamphlets and books. I attended every service and conference and could never figure out where they picked up those ‘heretical’ quotes. It certainly didn’t represent anything that I had ever heard or experienced.

Now, If Revival falls on a place and every one in town begins to show up, the other churches begin to wonder why it happened at ‘that’ place. Then many conclude that if ‘true’ revival was going to show up in this city it would naturally start here in ‘our’ church, after all we are the one with the: (add whatever) 24 hour prayer room, anointed Bible study, larger church facility, preacher w/ a doctors degree-that guy didn’t even go to Bible college, sound doctrine, healing ministry, after all, that church is part of that..(add+denomination, group, movement, or whatever) and etc. Finally, all too many church leaders end up saying something like this: “There must be something wrong with what’s going on over there–it’s way too popular–must be false. We will have to check it out and ‘protect’ our people.”

Mean while, it was the Lord’s intention to bring Revival to the whole city and to every church, and then spread it to the next town, but it gets short-circuited by our attitudes and responses. We all should be rejoicing when Revival falls anywhere and get on board. Instead we let the enemy divide us and actually use ‘the Revival’ as the excuse. Remember, Revival is always messy, never perfect, usually different than the last move, and then the enemy always adds his own stuff to the mix.

One wonders what Toronto would be like today if every church in the city had gotten on board and road it out. Would Florida be the same if everyone cooperated in Pensacola? I experienced some of the Toronto move. I could tell you all about what the enemy sowed there but won’t. Praise God, you can still see the effects of that little move world wide, I can still see it effecting the lives and ministries of hundreds of folk that I know.

This article is already way too long for a blog post. We’ll hold over the rest of our thoughts for the next. Part 2 -will feature some further observations and conclusions that were inspired by a message given by Steve Thompson (Director of MorningStar Ministries) who ministered last weekend at VCC-Laguna Niguel.

-“The Nativity Story” -The Star and The Magi

I went to see “The Nativity Story” with my daughter on Saturday (12/2) and have been thinking about it ever since. The movie was good, very good in some parts, and not quite so good in others. (Click here to see my complete review) It drove me back to the scriptures to check out a few things.

First of all, it seems like only the poor folk were really looking and hoping for the Messiah. Joseph and Mary were poor, and all their friends and relatives were also. The angel appears to poor shepherds in the field, not to the princes in the palace.

It is obvious that King Herod and the Chief priests were not seeking or even wanting a Messiah. The star was visible to all, but only the ‘gentile’ Magi left home to investigate. The Priests and scribes who supposedly knew the scriptures were not looking for the Messiah and didn’t care to leave the Temple even after they found the Bethlehem prophecy (Micah 5:2clip_image002). Herod didn’t leave his comfortable palace; he did react later however, sending soldiers to kill the child.

It is clear from the text that the Magi were in the east on Christmas night when they saw the star and probably several months passed before they made it to Jerusalem. Also notice that we really don’t know from the text how many Magi there actually were. We only know that they brought three different gifts–gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Leaving Jerusalem, they follow some kind of ‘supernatural’ star right to the house where baby Jesus and his parents were then living in Bethlehem. According to Matthew 2:9-10clip_image002[1], the star looked similar to the natural star they had observed months ago, but this one actually guides them right to the house? What kind of star was this?

So it seems that there were really two stars in the Christmas story, a ‘natural’ display on Christmas night, and some kind of ‘supernatural’ representation several months later. The first natural star was definitely a ‘sign’ but the second was a ‘wonder’ for sure. Least I sure wonder.

-A Power Encounter Starts a Revival?

I ran across this interesting story in an article in November 2006 Christianity Today: “Behold the Global Church” by Brenda Salter McNeil. The whole article was good but this particular part is incredible and I pass it along to all of you seeking and looking for Revival:

I once met a brother from Ghana, West Africa, who was completing his Ph.D. in the School of World Missions at Fuller Theological Seminary. During one of his trips home, he attempted to share the gospel with several people who lived in his community. Although they listened respectfully, no one turned to Jesus Christ. He later learned that they were intimidated by a witch doctor who lived nearby. The witch doctor kept a symbol of his authority hanging outside his home: a lattice basket, filled with water, that never leaked.

My friend decided to pray that God would empty the basket.

He stayed outside the home of the witch doctor and prayed all night that God would demonstrate his power. At some point he fell asleep. The next morning he was awakened by a commotion. The basket was empty. That town saw a mass revival as people learned about the God who caused the water to come out of the basket. There had been a power encounter and God had won.

Brenda McNeil also gives several ‘spot on’ comments and observations following the account:

We who were raised in the West, with the West’s rational worldview, can try to explain that story away. But I believe we need African Christians to teach us how to preach the gospel in power. The West is overwhelmed with information for information’s sake and wary of truth that is rational yet impotent. The next major evangelist may well emerge from Africa or Latin America or China or Singapore.

We will need them, and simply saying that we will need them is a big step for many of us. The culture of America, of American Christianity both white and black, has been one of self-sufficiency and independence. But what God may be doing in this dramatic, perilous kairos moment is calling us to something different”a culture of interdependency, where we depend on one another across racial, ethnic, and national boundaries.

Many of us in America and the West have thought about going to Africa or Asia to preach the Gospel. What if the next move of God in the USA and Europe is helped along by African or Asian evangelists? An interesting possibility.

-The Jesus Prayer

Pastor Ed Piorek gave an incredible message this morning at VCC. He talked about and demonstrated ‘the Jesus prayer’: “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me“. Words can’t really describe what happen today at church, but the Holy Spirit fell on the place and about 80% of the folks ended up front.

He quoted both Henri Nouwen and J.P. Moreland (Biola), and then later Heidi Baker, (what an interesting and varied combination) about the importance of this basic prayer:

In the expression, ‘Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me’ we find a powerful summary of all prayer” -Henry Nouwen

Here are three activities that have proven helpful to us in our engagement of prayer as a spiritual discipline, helping us develop the habit of ongoing prayer… First, we recommend that you begin by saying the ‘Jesus Prayer’ about three hundred times a day… Derived from Luke 18:38clip_image002, the Jesus Prayer has had a powerful impact on people at various times in Church history.” -J.P. Moreland

‘Lord Jesus Christ beautiful Son of God have mercy on me your beloved.’ I pray it for hours a day.” -Heidi Baker

Pastor Ed gave a number of testimonies of how this prayer was effective in bringing quite a few people to Christ, quite a large number of healings, and quite a few miracles. He told about a conference in Toronto last year where he gave a message about the Jesus Prayer and the holy Spirit fell on the place. Afterward, Heidi Baker handed him a note containing the quote above. But most important to me, he talked about how this prayer helped him to ‘pray unceasing’ (like Paul suggests in IThess. 5:17clip_image002[1]) and keep in touch, and to relate and receive from God all day long.

This actually gave me hope. I try to start of every morning with prayer but sometimes I get distracted and I’m half way to work before I remember. Then it’s difficult to pray while your driving and fighting bumper to bumper traffic. When I do remember, it’s like I’m in a hurry to get it done while the coffee is brewing. Lord Jesus, have mercy on me.

Then I get to work, and some of my orders are not ready yet and it’s going to make me late to every appointment, then customers start calling wondering where I am. My thoughts need to be redeemed by then–Lord Jesus, have mercy on me.

Yes this prayer is going to be a blessing for me and for everyone I have contact with all day long. Thank you Lord. Come Holy Spirit.

-“The Anatomy of a Prophetic Word” by James W. Goll

I just received the following from Encounters Network and James Goll. James and Michal Ann Goll have recently teamed with Rolland and Heidi Baker on a number of occasions, and both are gifted in prophetic ministry. Since there seems to be a continuing discussion about the prophetic on this website (and I certainly welcome it), this short outline message about prophecy- evaluation and application -would seem to be on target and helpful. For some of you, this will probably be quite elementary but still a useful review:

“The Anatomy of a Prophetic Word”

by James W. Goll (Vision Cast November 2006)

There are a number of factors that must be taken into consideration considering revelatory gifts. Failure to understand these factors can lead to dismissing a genuine word as being “off” or missing the impact that God intended for it to give. Therefore it behooves us to learn the many facets concerning the anatomy of a prophetic word.

I. REVELATION

A. Its Source

1. God – I Jn. 4:1clip_image002, “…test the spirits to see whether they are from God…”

2. Self – Jer. 23:21clip_image002[1] “…I did not speak to them, but they prophesied.” See also Ezek. 13:1-2clip_image002[2].

3. Satanic

a. I Jn. 4:3clip_image002[3] “…this is the spirit of the antichrist…”
b. Mt. 16:23clip_image002[4] – “…Get behind me, Satan!…”

B. Modes of Revelation
Numbers 12:6clip_image002[5], “…Hear now my words: If there is a prophet among you, I, the Lord, shall make myself known to Him…” through:

1. A vision.

2. A dream.

3. Mouth to mouth.

4. Dark sayings.

5. Parables – Hos. 12:10clip_image002[6].

6. Natural things – Jer. 18:1clip_image002[7].

II. INTERPRETATION

A. Bring the Two Together
The following scriptural references show how revelation must be wedded with proper interpretation. Numerous genuine words have been judged as false because of a wrong interpretation.

1. Acts 10:9-17clip_image002[8] – …Peter was greatly perplexed in mind as to what the vision which he had seen (revelation) might be (interpretation)… (v. 17).

2. I Pet. 1:10-11clip_image002[9] – …seeking to know what person or time (interpretation) the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating (revelation) as He predicted the sufferings of Christ… (v. 11).

3. Zech. 1:8-9clip_image002[10] – I saw at night (revelation)…then I said, “…what are these?”… (interpretation).

4. Dan. 8:15clip_image002[11] – …I, Daniel had seen the vision (revelation)…that I sought to understand it… (interpretation).

5. Acts 16:10clip_image002[12] – And when he had seen (revelation) the vision…concluding (interpretation) that God had called us…

6. Gen. 40:5-13clip_image002[13] – Then Joseph said to him, “This is the interpretation of it”… (v. 12).

7. Gen. 41:25clip_image002[14] – Now Joseph said…”God has told to Pharaoh what He is about to do.”

III. APPLICATION

A. Comparison of Acts 21:10clip_image002[15] and Acts 20:23clip_image002[16]

1. We…began begging him not to go up to Jerusalem.. (Acts 21:12clip_image002[17]).

2. Notice that those who heard Agabus were convinced that God was warning Paul not to go to Jerusalem. Paul, however, interpreted the word differently. This obviously made his application the exact opposite of what others had hoped it would be. Paul received the word not as a warning not to go, but as a confirmation of his sensing that he was to count the cost of what lay ahead.

IV. APPROPRIATION

Various keys unlock God’s prophetic word to be appropriated or fulfilled
in our lives. The following are some simple keys:

A. Faith
Heb. 4:2clip_image002[18] – …the word…did not profit…because it was not united by (with) faith…

B. Right Soil
Lk. 8:4clip_image002[19] – The parable of the sower of the seed portrays the importance of having the proper condition of the soil of your heart. The same seed was sowed to all, but had various results, due to the condition of the soil.

C. Diligence in Seeking
Dan. 9:2-3clip_image002[20],16clip_image002[21] – Here Daniel finds that the desolation of Jerusalem is to be for 70 years. His response was to give himself to seeking the face of the Lord through prayer and fasting.

V. Conditions

What are the conditions that must be met so that the promise can be fulfilled? Sometimes, these conditions are present in the heart of God, but are not spoken to the mind of man. Therefore questions must be asked.

A. Jeremiah 18:8clip_image002[22]
…if that nation…turns…

B. II Chronicles 7:14clip_image002[23]
If My people who are called by My name… (NKJ)

C. Jonah 3:4-10clip_image002[24]
Yet forty days and Ninevah will be overthrown…God relented.

D. II Kings 20:1-6clip_image002[25]
…Set your house in order, for you shall die and not live.

VI. THE TIMING OF A MATTER

There is a ‘Karios’ appointed and strategic timing for a matter to come into being. This takes patience and wisdom to discern.

A. Genesis 37:5-8clip_image002[26]
…Joseph had a dream….”Are you really going to rule over us?”

B. Habakkuk 2:3clip_image002[27]
For the vision is yet for the appointed time…though it tarries, wait…

C. Galatians 4:4clip_image002[28]
…when the fullness of…time had come, God sent forth His Son… (NKJ)

D. Mark 4:28clip_image002[29]
The soil produces…first the blade, then the head, then the mature grain…

E. Isaiah 9:6clip_image002[30]
For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given… (NKJ)

VII. MOTIVATION

God looks deeply into the heart of man. What is our true inner motivation? Do we want glory for the Lord or promotion before man?

A. Ezekiel 14:4-5clip_image002[31]
…Any man…who sets up his idols in his heart, puts right before his face the stumbling block of his iniquity, and then comes to the prophet…give…an answer (according to)…his idols…

B. Psalm 106:13-15clip_image002[32]
They quickly forgot His works; they did not wait for His counsel, but craved…and tempted God…so He gave them their request…(NASB) but sent leanness into their soul (NKJ).

VIII. CONTRADICTION

In some occasions, the Holy Spirit has spoken very clearly. However, the birth of the promise can appear differently than expected, especially in infant stages. Again we must cry out to the Lord that we miss not the day of visitation due to the manner of which that promise has first appeared.

A. Isaiah 9:6clip_image002[33]
For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given… (NKJ)

B. Matthew 1:18-25clip_image002[34]
…Joseph her husband, being a righteous man, and not wanting to disgrace her, desired to put her away secretly…(Joseph was changed from being a man of principle into a man of faith).

C. I Kings 18:41clip_image002[35]
…There is the sound of the roar of a heavy shower.

IX. DISCERNING PROPERLY

We must be careful how we listen. One of the potential problems for the prophetic person is that he is assumed to be in the ‘prophetic mode’ all the time and every time he speaks. This not only shows lack of wisdom on the part of the listener, it also dishonors the prophetic person. Let us prayerfully, and with godly trusted counsel, seek proper discernment.

A. II Samuel 7:1-15clip_image002[36]
…Nathan the prophet…said…”Go, do all that is in your mind…the Lord is with you”…Go…say to…David, “Are you the one who should build me a house…?”

B. I Samuel 16:6-7clip_image002[37] (Samuel)
…He looked…and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is…BUT THE LORD SAID…

X. FINAL STATEMENT

When all of these wisdom perimeters are put in place, let’s create an atmosphere of faith and ask the Holy Spirit to move freely. Let us not err on the side of ‘license’, nor on the side by ‘stifling”the Holy Spirit’s presence and power. But with these understandings in place, let us walk on into fruitful prophetic maturation.

-“When Heaven Invades Earth: A Practical Guide to a Life of Miracles”

By Bill Johnson (Shippensburg,PA: Destiny Image Pub. Inc., 2003,190 pgs.)

Bill Johnson is the senior pastor of Bethel Church (AG) of Redding, California, but more than that, he is one of those leading the charge towards true revival. ‘When Heaven Invades Earth’ is more than a clever title, this book identifies how life can really change for the better when ‘The Kingdom’ really does come into one’s life, after all our prayers asking for it.

I found myself reading the chapters slowly in order to receive the entire message. There is a lot here to consider. It is a clarion call to leave behind the ordinary and enter into a new way of thinking and a new way of life where healing and miracles are looked for and expected. It is a call for a change of world view. It is a challenge to leave the regular religious stuff behind and to really seek first the Kingdom and to really seek a closer relationship with God. To really expect the Kingdom to be manifest in power, and not merely in words.

Bill Johnson really does live and aspire to what he is talking about in his book. Several years ago I had the opportunity to pray for the sick along with Bill and several others on our ministry team. It had been a long night and midnight was closing in. A young man hobbled up to us with one leg obviously shorter than the other by three inches or so. I must admit that I had some doubt at first. Bill had him lay down and we began to pray for him. With full confidence, Bill Johnson held the young mans foot and commanded the leg to grow and it did. We kept on praying until the leg was fully extended to the same length as the other one. It was a night that I will never forget.

This book goes far beyond what one can explain in a short review, this is one of those rare life changing books that only comes along every once in a while. At least it was for me.
